New I-9 Form Takes Effect on April 3, 2009
Effective April 3, 2009, employers should be using the revised Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification. The revision date (Rev. 02/02/09) is printed on the lower right-hand corner of the form. Employers may no longer use previous versions of the Form I-9.
The most significant change is that expired documents are no longer acceptable forms of identification or employment authorization. There is also a revised list of acceptable documents that is intended to improve the security and effectiveness of the Form I-9 process.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) also updated the Handbook for Employers – Instructions for Completing Form I-9 to reflect the requirements of the revised Form I-9.
The new I-9 form can be downloaded from the following site: http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-9.pdf
The Handbook for Employers is available at http://www.uscis.gov/files/nativedocuments/m-274.pdf
