We mourn the passing at age 91 of Robert J. (“Bob”) Fenlon, a giant in the area of labor law and a leader, mentor, partner and friend to many of us.
Bob had a distinguished career as a football player for the University of Cincinnati Bearcats (which included three bowl games). He also earned his law degree there and served for a time as an assistant coach for future Pro Football Hall of Fame head coach Sid Gillman.
Bob then returned to home town St. Paul to begin his law practice with Dick Felhaber and Gus Larson in a firm that would become Felhaber, Larson, Fenlon & Vogt. He quickly grew to become one of the most skilled and respected management labor lawyers around the state and across the country.
Bob was revered by his clients for his incisive and tenacious approach to labor negotiations. Across the table, union representatives knew him as a tough but honorable adversary whose word was his bond.
At the office, Bob was a kind and gracious presence. He always had time to discuss legal issues and strategies with his partners, and to offer help and encouragement to the younger lawyers. He was a gentleman to everyone and fostered a culture of civility and professionalism at the firm that remains his legacy to this day.
Bob retired after a sterling legal career of 50 years to pursue two of his greatest passions – attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and school activities, and playing golf.
Bob was preceded in death by his loving wife, Pat. He is survived by his six devoted children, as well as 20 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
